  • Characteristics of the Latin European Cluster

  • Social Control

  • Culture

French and Italians have are some of the best food in the world.
Food is a big deal, not only what you eat, but how you eat (long meals and good conversation). Israel is in in this cluster due to historical ties, shared seas, and Catholic work in Holy Lands. Gender equality has also been slow to come to this cluster in government and companies. Parents are much more authoritative here than in other developed countries.
This paternalism is directly against the Individualism and low Power Distance of Anglos.
This cluster is much more Collectivist and conflicts with American hyper-Individualism.
Do not be in a rush during a meal as this will be perceived as being rude.
Cluster midway for Assertiveness, Performance, Power Distance, and Uncertainty Avoidance. This culture is more Affective in communications than many Western countries.
  • Economics

The idea is people with great power, money, and influence should take care of those with less. Business is not discussed until after the meal; Meals are for developing relationships.
These economies are not as strong as in other parts of western Europe.
Italy, Spain, and to a lesser degree France, are having economic issues within the EU.
Italy, and especially France, have experienced the horrors of two world wars.
  • History / Politics

This cluster is from the Roman empire where religion and state came together.
In Rome, Cesar gave you peace, freedom, and justice if you gave him complete allegiance. Government is expected to solve problems in a way that is not done in other Western cultures. Historically, Portugal, Spain, Italy, and France have had great impact on world politics.
Much weaker economically and politically than the Anglo-American and Germanic clusters.
  • Spirituality

All of these nations have been strongly Catholic and much less touched by the Reformation. Vatican City is in Rome and Italy have not had any significant Reformation at any time.
The number of people attending church has dropped dramatically and often attenders are old. Ceremonial aspects of church remain, but few have a vibrant belief in the true Gospel.
