History / Politics
Was part of Pakistan for 24 years after both separated from India in 1948. Gained independence after a bitter civil war in 1971; Had 18 military coups until 1991. Now one of Islamic world’s only democracies, but still has political tension and corruption. Politics seems more focused on arguing between wealthy clans than helping the nation. There are 20,000 NGO’s (Non-government agencies) trying to help the people.
Christianity is starting to take hold; Most come from low-caste Hindu backgrounds. A lot of growth has occurred among 8 tribal groups, and notable growth in another 18. Lack of trained pastors has inhibit discipleship and maturity within the church. The 240 million Bengalis are the largest unreached people group in the world. Christians endure persecution even though the law decrees religious freedom.
Pray for continued openness of the Gospel among the lower castes. Pray for persecution to decrease. Ask the Lord to raise up more Christian workers and provide more materials.
