The economy is one of the weakest in the Caribbean due to Marxism and U.S. sanctions. Lacks many essentials, but has high quality healthcare and literacy; Tourism is increasing. Black market crime, drugs, and prostitution have been a major problem. Castro imprisoned 500,000 political prisoners and 1 million became U.S. refugees. With President Obama lifting many sanctions, economy should improve.
History / Politics
Independence in 1898 from Spain; Fidel Castro brought Marxism to Cuba in 1959. Castro’s younger brother Raul took over in 2008 and has slowly relaxed restrictions. In 2014, President Obama announced that better relations with Cuba will be sought. Sanctions are being cut back; tourism is increasing, as well as spiritual opportunities.
There are a lot of cult religious practices in the church, including ones similar to voodoo. The government still persecutes believers, but less than in the past. Fewer than 10% of Catholics go to church; Evangelicals doubled in number from 1995 to 2010.
Pray that the new openness will allow more freedom of religion within Cuba. Pray for revival within the Catholic church and continued growth of evangelicals. Pray that the Cuban diaspora might be open to Christ and bring the Gospel back to Cuba.
