History / Politics
Has had a democratic government since 1961 after a long, repressive dictatorship. Nation has had turmoil for 500 years; Corruption, violent crime, and promiscuity are common. Under Spanish rule, 1 million indigenous people died (many of disease). Slaves were imported to replenish the work force. Slaves worked on sugar cane; European and Dominican rulers exploited the workers.
About 50% of Catholics do not practice their religion. Many others have dangerous combinations of Christianity and voodoo-like practices. Evangelicals doubled in the last 20 years, but are often poor and dependent on foreigners.
Pray for revival within the Catholic church and that the voodoo practices would cease. Pray for the evangelical church to be strengthened and to continue to grow.
