History / Politics
Was French colony for 132 years, but freed in 1962 after a bitter war with the French. Current president since 1999 worked to end a civil war that had killed 100,000 people. Much suffering from war with the French, then a war of liberation, and then a civil war. Freedom is limited, and there are many human rights violations.
Four million Algerians have emigrated to Europe and are more open to the Gospel there. The church has grown in the last decade, especially among evangelized Berbers. There has also been much persecution in this traditionally Muslim society. It is illegal to import Bibles.
Pray for perseverance of the Saints and that the Berbers will continue to turn to Christianity. Pray for greater openness among the Arabs to the truth of Jesus as Savior.
