History / Politics
Was an Italian colony from 1890-1941; Then affiliated with Ethiopia until freedom in 1993. Governments since then have been unstable and corrupt. Forced military service is resented, and many flee the country to avoid serving.
Evangelicals have grown rapidly in the face of persecution which still persists. There has been intense religious persecution since 2002 by the Marxist president. 2002 law recognized only 4 religions (Sunni Muslim, Orthodox, Catholic, and Lutheran). As many as 3,000 Christian evangelical leaders and other Christians suffer in prison.
