Nation has been independent for millennia; There is moderate stability and corruption. Marxist revolt overthrew Emperor Haile Selassie, but this collapsed in 1991. Country has been democratic since, but has had border wars with Eritrea and Somalia. The ethnic groups tend to be divided regionally, hindering national unity.
Evangelicals have grown dramatically in the 20th century, mostly in the last 20 years. Many more Muslims are converting to Christianity, especially in the last 20 years. Church leaders usually have less than one year of training. Bible translation is occurring for 35 languages, because congregations use local languages. Ethiopian Orthodox church kept the country Christian while surrounded by Islamic nations. This isolation led to a unique tradition and theology. A strong evangelical and charismatic network has arisen in the Orthodox church. There have also been other Protestant churches growing here.
