The economy is based on cocoa, timber, gold, and tourism. The nation is rich in natural resources, but forests have been over-logged and soil depleted. History / Politics
Independence in 1957 from Britain with high stability and low corruption for Africa. The first regime was a disaster, and this was followed by 5 military dictatorships. Stable democracy since 1992; Nation has helped in regional diplomacy/peacekeeping. About half of the college-educated citizens live abroad.
There are many good churches and Christian schools in Ghana. The churches also have a vision for reaching the non-Believers, especially in the north. Muslim increase due to births, immigration, and marriages of women with Muslim men. Ghana enjoys a vibrant spiritual life and also has many training institutions. However, church attendance has only been about 10% of the population each week. Traditional African religious practices remain the biggest challenge for Christians.
Praise the Lord for the peace and religious freedom in the country. Pray that the church will reach out to northern villages which usually are unevangelized. Pray that more Christians will reach out compassionately to Muslims and share Christ. Pray that the Trokosi (girls in servitude to shrines) will be freed. Pray that the 30,000 street children will have adequate ministers to help them.
