History / Politics
National independence in 1821 from Spain; Had 134 revolts by 1932. Military ruled most of 20th century, but a weak civilian government took over in 1984. The military is still powerful; Society still dealing with much corruption, unemployment, and crime. Honduras has more street children than any country in the Western Hemisphere; many are exploited to become gang members and sex workers. Organized crime is involved in drugs and wields much power in society. Honduras has 60% of Central America’s AIDS cases.
Evangelicals have grown from 32,000 in 1960 to almost 2 million today. The evangelical church has not been very unified. The Catholic church continues to lose influence, with only 20% attending mass.
Pray for continued growth, unity, and strength of evangelicals in the country. Pray for improved moral behavior, repentance, reconciliation, and healing. Pray for a revival within the Catholic church to bring transformation.
