History / Politics
Haiti became the world's first black republic in 1804. Since then there has been a history of violence, dictatorships, and military coups. The 2010 earthquake was a huge disaster, with 230,000 lives lost. Much of this is attributed to widespread corruption, leading to unsafe buildings. Voodoo creates fear throughout the society; Many Catholics practice some voodoo.
After the earthquake, the president called for 3 days of prayer and fasting and many did. The country needs prayer to overcome voodoo and other non-Christian practices. While evangelicals have grown during the difficult times, there is much work to be done. Pastors need to be more thoroughly trained; language barriers are a problem. Teenagers need prayer as they try to cope with the poverty, unemployment, and chaos.
Pray for ongoing healing and growth for the country, still recovering from the earthquake. Pray that evangelicals will continue to grow. Pray that people would turn away from voodoo and come to a true relationship with Jesus. Pray for ongoing healing, repentance, and reconciliation for all the violence.
