    Money sent from Haitians abroad back home is a large part of the economy.
    Corruption continues to be widespread and crime is high.
    About 10% of Haitian children are restaveks; They can be bought as slave labor.
  • History / Politics

    Haiti became the world's first black republic in 1804.
    Since then there has been a history of violence, dictatorships, and military coups.
    The 2010 earthquake was a huge disaster, with 230,000 lives lost. Much of this is attributed to widespread corruption, leading to unsafe buildings.
    Voodoo creates fear throughout the society; Many Catholics practice some voodoo.

    After the earthquake, the president called for 3 days of prayer and fasting and many did.
    The country needs prayer to overcome voodoo and other non-Christian practices.
    While evangelicals have grown during the difficult times, there is much work to be done.
    Pastors need to be more thoroughly trained; language barriers are a problem.
    Teenagers need prayer as they try to cope with the poverty, unemployment, and chaos.
