History / Politics
Italy was united as a single state in 1870, but regions still maintain power and influence. Democratic since 1946, but has had more than 60 changes in government since then. It has been a member of the European Union, but its economy has been weak since 2008. Has contributed much through Roman law, Renaissance art and music, and fashion. Organized crime is a problem that continues to grow.
Most Italians are Roman Catholic culturally, but distrust the church. The north is largely secular, and the south a mixture of Catholicism and folk religion. Many people pray to saints far more often than to Jesus. The Protestant church is weak and divided, and has never seen a large revival in Italy. Charismatic churches have been somewhat effective, especially in the southern part of Italy. Even though this is the home of Catholicism, it has been spiritually cold for a long time.
Pray that the coldness of the country will stop and more people will be open to the Lord. Pray that there would be a revival in the Catholic church and among the evangelicals. Pray that Believers will understand that they can pray to Jesus directly rather than saints. Pray for the immigrants who often arrive illegally and are discriminated against.
