History / Politics
Independence occurred in 1954 from France; Laos communists in control by 1975. The communist party still has control and limits freedom.
Church growth has been rapid even under government restrictions and persecution. The government recognizes 2 protestant groups, in which most of the growth happens. There is also a large group of underground house churches. About 90% of trained ministers left in 1975; current leaders need training and materials. Most of Laos remains unevangelized; Government prohibits missionaries.
