Independence in 1958 from France and Spain; Limited democracy under ruling monarch. More freedom granted due to the “Arab spring” uprisings elsewhere. Morocco has been involved in a long-running territorial dispute with Western Sahara.
Moroccans are proud of their country as a center of Islamic learning. New believers are rare and are persecuted by family, police, and religious authorities. Arab and Berber Bible translations are difficult to import, but can be found on the Internet. Missionary activities are forbidden by government; 100 missionaries were recently expelled.
