History / Politics
Independence in 1948 from Great Britain; Was occupied by Japan in WWII. Controlled by military junta until 2010 when transition to civilian democracy began. Some increase in freedom in recent years; Armed separatist groups operate in several places. Military junta (1962-2011) was brutal with torture, imprisonment, and rape common. Much of this brutality was directed towards minorities.
Most people are controlled by Buddhism and education is often by Buddhist monks. Buddhism is often mixed with occult beliefs, superstitions, and fear of spirits. Junta tried to destroy Christianity by expelling foreign missionaries and destroying villages. Christians have helped care for AIDS patients and drug abusers, causing some hearts to soften. Most Christians belong to minority groups that battled against the military.
