One of world’s poorest countries, with an economy based on subsistence farming and herding. Country also exports fish and iron; Offshore oil has been discovered, but must be developed. Drought in 1970’s-1980’s devastated the country; Corruption is also a common problem. One-third of Mauritania's children are malnourished.
History / Politics
Independence from France in 1960 was followed by a series of military coups. Multiparty democracy occurred in 1992, then more coups, and then an elected government. White moors dominate the country; Tensions between ethnic groups remain high.
The entire country remains unreached, as Islam has dominated the country for 1000 years.
Pray for an openness in the country and that the Lord would send dreams to convert Muslims. Pray that Christians from other countries might help reconciliation of tensions.
