Indigenous (80% Maldivians of South Asian Dravidian origin); Foreign (20%, Indian, Sri Lankan, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, and some Westerners).
  • Common Languages

    Dhivehi (of Sanskrit origin)
  • Economy

Most income comes from fishing and tourism, but most people are very poor.
There is lack of fertile soil and fresh water, and a very dense population.
  • History / Politics

The nation has 1,200 coral islands, with only 202 inhabited.
It was a nominal British protectorate until 1965.
It was ruled by one man from 1978-2008, but now a multi-party democracy.
Has limited amount of freedom now, but not freedom of religion.
  • Spirituality

Islam is the only accepted religion, and the government forbids the practice of others.
Many people who claim to be Muslims follow the occult practices called fanditha.
These are among the least evangelized people, as missions have never been allowed.
Bible was translated in 1811, but lost or destroyed -- only parts of Luke and Acts remain.
  • Prayers

This is a very beautiful, but dark culture in need of a lot of prayer.
Pray that the crime rate, drug use, and child abuse would slow, and Christ would enter.
Pray that the Lord would provide for religious freedom so that Jesus can be shared.
