History / Politics
Independent republic since 1838; Corrupt dictatorship ended in 1979 after a civil war. Cold war politics with Marxist Sandinistas and Contras caused bloodshed and distrust. Current cooperation between the Right and the Left may help the country to heal.
Evangelicals were 2% in 1960 and 30% today; This growth has been during chaotic times. Both the Catholic church and evangelical mega-churches influence the politicians. Events of 1978-1998 divided communities, churches, and families; Unity is needed. Missionaries are sent to other countries; Christians come and teach from other countries.
Praise the Lord for the growth in the evangelical church and pray for continued unity. Pray for integrity with Christians with connections to the government. Pray for effective and increasing numbers of missionaries to other countries.
