History / Politics
Independence in 1824 from Spain; Has a long history of dictatorships and military rule. Democracy did not help and two Marxist groups brought 15 years of guerilla war. President Fujimora dealt strongly with Marxists, but severe corruption occurred also. Future governments must make wise choices about poverty, corruption, and ecology.
People still suffer the after-effects of terror groups and death squads, and need reconciliation. Foreign corporations try to exploit the natural resources, but hurt the indigenous people. The Catholic church is in crisis since only 5% attend mass, and many have changed churches. Evangelicals grew from 78,000 in 1960 to 3.4 million in 2010, even during chaotic times. Once the circumstances improved, divisions among evangelicals surfaced. Many Christians still use pagan practices, including those of the Incas.
Pray for reconciliation and forgiveness for past injustices across the nation. Pray that there will be a true revival within the Catholic church. Pray for continued growth of evangelicals and that strong discipleship would occur. Pray that the farmers will turn away from growing cocaine and toward beneficial crops. Pray for continued positive influence of charismatic groups on all churches.
