The nation has a free market economy with manufacturing, trade, and tourism main revenue. Has one of the highest income levels in the Caribbean, but 45% live in poverty. Many move to the U.S. to find work; 50% of the entire population live abroad.
History / Politics
Spanish colony until 1898 when Spain ceded it to the U.S. after Spanish-American War. Has an elected governor, although the U.S. President is the chief executive.
The church has very little positive effect on the social ills of the society. Has a very high rate of substance abuse, corruption, crime, AIDS, and poverty. Evangelicals grew from 0.1% in 1900 to 25.2% in 2010. Most are Catholics, but charismatic teachings have revived the church somewhat. Mission outreach to other cultures is growing; more training and support is needed.
Pray that the church would be a leader in helping to improve society. Pray that evangelicals will continue to grow and that discipleship will be strong. Pray for continued growth of missions, and effective outreach to other countries.
