2/3’s of Somalians are herders, but over-grazing and desertification are problems. There is some agriculture in south and northwest; Civil wars have devastated economy. Aid from other countries and money sent from relatives abroad is essential. More than 500,000 people died of starvation during famines in 1992 and 2010-2012. Healthcare spending is very low, and relief workers are limited due to Islamic law. Women usually have female genital mutilation and rape is also common.
History / Politics
Independence in 1960 from Britain (north) and Italy (south). War with Ethiopia and among warlords has devastated the country. No viable government between 1991 and 2012; Democratic elections occurred in 2012. It has been Africa’s most unsuccessful state, but stability may be slowly coming.
The Somali church is small, but has persevered despite difficult times and persecution. Somali diaspora has reached 6 million; Most are in Ethiopia, Kenya, Yemen, and Djibouti.
Pray for stability and religious freedom in the country which will allow evangelism. Pray for the small church to be encouraged and to show integrity in difficult circumstances. Pray for evangelism to the large diaspora of Somalis.
