About 80% agricultural and livestock economy; 80% of the people live below the poverty line. Growth hindered by drought, civil wars, lack of seaport, and poor infrastructure. Recent discovery of mineral and oil deposits may help, but corruption is a problem.
History / Politics
Freedom from France in 1960, but long history of violence, coups, and rebel activity. The Zaghawa tribe dominates the government even though it is suppose to be democratic. Darfur (Sudan) conflict caused 400,000 refugees to enter east Chad, but aid came also. Some consider Chad the world’s most corrupt government.
Tribal rivalries between the Muslim north and the Christian south create strife. Tribal rivalries within churches also hinder spiritual maturity. Traditional religions and animism are problems in some churches. Many Muslims have heard the Gospel, and doubted Islam due to Islamic violence in Darfur. Chad has more unreached people than any country in Africa.
Pray for a stable and just government and that corruption will decrease. Pray for church unity and that Christians will desire to evangelize more than gather wealth. Pray that the Lord would provide better Christian training and materials to improve growth. Pray that the church will send missionaries to unreached people. Pray that this Muslim-majority country will continue to allow the Gospel to be presented.
