    Oil and gas are the main sources of wealth; Famous for carpets, horses, and camels.
    Rural areas are very poor; 80% of the land is desert, so water will be an issue in the future.

    Nomadic, tribal past, but united by Russian Czar in 1881, then Soviets until 1992.
    Former Soviet leader became a dictator with control of army, police, press, and justice.
    He died in 2006 allowing the slow movement toward a less repressive system.

    Most of the Christians in the country are Russians, Ukrainians, or Armenians.
    Authorities have expelled almost every foreign Christian and have persecuted pastors.
    The church has grown despite threats from the government and others.
    Turkmen New Testament is just about completed and an Old Testament is in process.
    A large number of Turkmen are in nearby countries, and may be evangelized more easily.
