History / Politics
Independence in 1962 from Great Britain; Had brutal regime/conflicts from 1971-1986. Stability has slowly improved and a multiparty democracy began in 2005.
One of the most truly Christian nations in the world with a strong evangelical presence. Public prayer is common and charismatic churches are growing the fastest. Christian groups provide counseling, spiritual help, and education to heal the war years. Most Ugandans are Christians, but struggle with greed and ungodly lifestyles. HIV-infection dropped from 25% of the population in 1992 to below 10% in 2001. Prosperity Gospel and other false teachings occur; More education needed for pastors. The Youth need prayer as many were abducted as child soldiers or sex slaves. There are also many street children in the cities, and 2 million HIV orphans. Uganda survived a violent time and has great potential as missionaries to other Africans. Muslims are well-funded and need to be reached as do persons of animistic religions.
Pray for continued growth and maturity of all the churches in the nation. Pray for continued healing and reconciliation from past violence. Pray that people would not be drawn away by wealth, but worship the Lord with purity. Pray that the Lord would open the hearts of the Muslims and animists to the true faith.
