This is the wealthiest African nation with a large industrial base, minerals, and agriculture. Despite this, there is a high gap between the wealthy and poor, and corruption is an issue. Many white professionals and farmers are leaving the country.
History / Politics
Apartheid policy brought pain and suffering to the black majority, but ended in 1991. Free elections occurred in 1994; Nelson Mandela was elected and fought against racial bias. Mandela's successors have been a disappointment to many.
Biblical Christianity is solid in South Africa and has had a big impact on other countries also. There are good ministries to AIDS and rape victims, prisoners, and slum dwellers. Prayers are still needed for reconciliation associated with apartheid. Evangelicals hurt their witness by being slow to stand against apartheid. The nation sends out many missionaries, but poverty, AIDS, and crime at home are big issues. Several million have immigrated from the rest of Africa looking for peace and work.
Pray that Christians here will continue to have a large impact on Africa and the world. Pray for the continued healing of souls from the apartheid era and after. Pray for all those in poverty, with AIDS, and crime victims. Pray for ministries to the many African immigrants and that they will take the Gospel home. Pray that the sending of missionaries would continue at a high rate.
