The economy is terrible even with rich farmland and abundant mineral deposits. Corruption, mismanagement, disease, and military action in Congo caused many problems. A land re-distribution plan in 2002 caused the nation to go into a severe downturn. Land-reform caused millions to leave the country, especially the professional class. Nation once was a major food exporter, but cannot feed its own people now. Unemployment is extremely high; Hospitals, schools, and other services are often closed.
History / Politics
Formerly Rhodesia, independent from Britain since 1965; Black guerilla warfare till 1980. Was one-party state until 2008, but Mugabe has stayed in power; Voting irregularities occur. State-sponsored violence is directed at political opponents, the media, and social activists. It has one of the world’s worst AIDS crises, and so many AIDS orphans live in the nation.
Churches have grown through all the difficulties and are helping with services. The Youth are disillusioned and need to be encouraged by Christian ministries.
Pray for the church to stand for godliness, justice, and against corruption. Pray that the Lord would raise up people who would move the government towards justice. Pray for the Youth who feel disillusioned.
